MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — The announcement everyone expected to come was delivered midday Tuesday as WVU senior Tucker DeVries, expected to be a key to the team's success this season, was announced out for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury that will require surgery.
The announcement was made by his father and coach Darian DeVries and was expected as DeVries has not played since Dec. 6 when WVU defeated Georgetown. DeVries had a strong final game scoring 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists
"Since early December, we have consulted with our team doctors and numerous medical professionals to evaluate and treat Tucker's injury," coach DeVries said. "Tucker did everything he could to get back on the court this season, but unfortunately it has been determined by all parties involved that surgery is necessary. He will be out of action for approximately three months."
When DeVries was named coach and the younger DeVries announced his transfer to play his follow season with his father after having played for him at Drake, he was healing from shoulder surgery. His arm was in a sling and he missed much of the early workouts.
A two-time Missouri Valley Player of the Year, DeVries was a solid partner for Javon Small as a swing man while Small was emerging as a superstar after transferring from Oklahoma State.
DeVries played eight games and averaged 14.9 points per game with 4.9 rebounds and served as a "coach on the court" for a team that was learning a new system, helping both defensively and offensively while adding a steadiness to the play.
But the shoulder never healed correctly and when he reached eight games they knew they had to do something for the shoulder. It was hoped they could get him back to play, but wanted to go no further or they would have blown his redshirt.
