CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Junior guard Jada Sutherlin poured in 24 points and youthful teammates Savanna Sherrard and Kendall Sturm pitched in with solid efforts to pace Robert C. Byrd to a 63-26 victory over Liberty in Big 10 Conference action Friday night at RCB.
The win moved the Eagles to 3-9 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 0-9.
“We shared the ball and we tried to get it inside and I thought we got some points in the paint that we’ve been trying to do in earlier games,” veteran RCB coach Robert Shields said. “Jada got us going early and we also got some good efforts from a few others, too.
“And I thought we were more active on defense than we’ve been and that helped get us some easy points.”
Sherrard, a freshman guard, scored 11 points off the bench, while Sturm, a sophomore forward, came up with a double double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Amirah Moore added nine points and five rebounds, while freshman Cadence Blake added six points.
“We just couldn’t get any shots to drop early and 12 (Sutherlin) and 10 (Sherrard) really killed us early in the game,” Liberty coach Tyler Stewart said. “I thought we did fix some things at halftime and played a little better in the second half, but they were too far ahead.”
Senior Gabby Forman led the Mountaineer with eight points, while freshman Aubri Adams added six points. Makayla Thompson added five points while Briar Travelstead pulled down eight rebounds to go along with her four points.
Sutherlin hit a long 3 from the left side and then scored off the break to help RCB to a 6-0 lead.
Forman countered with a 3-ball from the left corner at the 6:30 mark of the quarter. But another fast break layup by Sutherlin followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Sherrard increased the RCB lead to 11 points at 14-3 with 3:10 left in the first quarter.
Thompson banked one in for Liberty 20 seconds later, but baskets from Sutherlin, Blake and Sherrard made it 20-5 with 58 seconds left in the period.
Travelstead answered with an inside hoop 30 seconds later before Sturm hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 21-7 at the end of the quarter.
Any thoughts of a Liberty comeback were laid to rest at the outset of the second quarter, as RCB rattled off 10-straight points for a 31-7 lead at the 3:49 mark of the second quarter.
The Eagles led 37-13 at the half.
