Seven-time national champion coach and Fairmont native Nick Saban announced his retirement from coaching Wednesday evening, according to ESPN's Chris Low on X (formerly Twitter).
Saban won six national titles at Alabama and one at LSU.
Saban served as Alabama's head football coach since 2007 and had an overall coaching record of 201-29.
Saban, a graduate of Monongah High School, played quarterback for Monongah's state championship-winning team in 1968.
Saban played defensive back at Kent State, where his coaching career began as a graduate assistant and linebackers coach.
He later served as an assistant coach at Syracuse before returning to West Virginia to coach defensive backs from 1978-79.
Saban served as an assistant coach at Ohio State, Navy and Michigan State before moving to the NFL to be a defensive backs coach for the Houston Oilers.
His career as a head coach would begin at Toledo, where the Rockets went 9-2 in his first season.
Saban would then return to the NFL ranks, serving as a defensive coordinator alongside Bill Belichick for four seasons.
Returning to the collegiate ranks in 1995, Saban took over as head coach of Michigan state for four seasons before taking over at LSU in 1999.
In the 2003 season, LSU finished with a 13-1 record. A win over Oklahoma, 21-14, gave Saban his first national championship.
While Saban would once again return to the NFL, becoming head coach of the Dolphins, he would return to Alabama in 2007.
Saban's record as an NFL coach stands at 15-17.
In his 16-season tenure with Alabama, the Tide won six national championships: 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2020.
Saban also won 11 SEC championships as a head coach and was a five-time SEC Coach of the Year.
Saban coached four Heisman Trophy winners at Alabama: Mark Ingram II, Derrick Henry, DeVonta Smith and Bryce Young.
In 2013, Saban was inducted to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
Alabama finished with a 12-2 record in 2023, losing to Michigan in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
