CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Mary Frame, a registered nurse at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, was recently honored with The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses.
Frame is a nurse on the 5th floor Community Living Center at the Clarksburg VA. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
The nomination submitted read: “I have a cat named GeeGee, who helps me. When I was admitted in the hospital, animal control had me surrender my cat. I knew I was sick, but I did not want to lose my GeeGee. Once I started feeling better, I began to want to leave, and I was angry.
"Nurse Mary talked to me, took me outside and found out about GeeGee, my cat. She then called the Humane Society and checked on her (GeeGee), printed me a picture of her which gave me the strength to continue to stay a little longer.
"She arranged for a social worker to help get the re-homing fee paid. Then when off duty, Nurse Mary helped get my cat and bring her to me. I know now I have friends at the VA and will always come here for my needs because of the good care given to me.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.
The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
"When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Louis A. Johnson VAMC are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award”, said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, CEO and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation
Dr. Piper Knight, Associate Director of Patient Care Services, said, “The nurses here at the Louis A. Johnson VAMC provide the best care to our Veteran’s and this is an outstanding example of the dedication, attention, determination, and engagement our nurses strive to provide to all veterans.”
