This week’s Fare Report is food for thought. The main question is — do you drink enough water?
According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the adult human body is roughly 60% water. Furthermore, the heart and brain are roughly 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. Our skin contains about 64% water, muscles and kidneys are around 79% water, and our bones contain about 31% water.
That is a lot of water! Water plays several important functions in the body. Water is the primary building block of cells. It carries much needed nutrients and oxygen to cells in helping to maintain cell health.
Water helps to regulate the internal body temperature and maintain blood pressure. It also insulates the brain, spinal cord and organs.
Drinking water helps flush waste and toxins from the body. It also helps the body dissolve minerals, soluble vitamins and nutrients. Drink water with every meal to aid digestion.
Drinking water prevents dehydration and may also help with weight loss. Replace sugary juices and sodas with water to cut down on excess sugar and calories.
So, how much water should one drink each day? Though many factors can influence the actual amount needed such as exercise and even climate, according to the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the recommended amount is as follows:
— men should consume around 125 ounces, and women should consume around 91 ounces.
If you don’t typically consume the recommended amount, then consider some of these tips to help increase water intake.
Carry a water bottle and refill it throughout the day.
Choose water when dining out; you will save money and reduce calories.
Freeze freezer-safe water bottles. Grab one to go in the morning and enjoy ice cold water all day.
Get creative with water. Try adding cucumber, pineapple, lemon, lime, or orange slices to water to give it a thirst-quenching and delightful taste.
Enjoy!
