POMEROY, Ohio (WV News) — Meigs County Sheriff Scott Fitch has announced that his office has been informed by multiple local banks regarding fake $50 bills that are in circulation and have been received from several local businesses.
Fitch said the $50 bills are actually genuine $5 bills and $20 bills that have been photocopied over to make them look like a $50 bill.
The sheriff said it is evident the bills are fake if the note is slightly raised due to the photocopy. Fitch said the watermark will still show Abraham Lincoln or Andrew Jackson instead of Ulysses S. Grant. Fitch advised to check the security strip, as it will say "USA FIVE" or “USA TWENTY” instead of "USA 50."
The sheriff said the counterfeit detection pen will not mark this bill as counterfeit, and to be cautious if accepting cash as payment.
