WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Bridgeport held Lewis County to just two first-quarter points and rode tenacious defense, unselfish offense and a 21-point performance by Landon Sanders to a 72-32 win over the Minutemen.
The Indians stormed out to a 13-0 lead in the game, turning defensive stops and Lewis County turnovers into layups on the other end of the floor.
Lewis County finally got on the board for the first time on a put-back bucket from Maddox Gillespie with 3:30 on the first quarter clock.
The Indians continued to build their lead in the second quarter outscoring the Minutemen 22-12 in the quarter, which was punctuated with an exclamation point when Carter Zuliani caught a pass in the lane and threw it down with both hands to cap off the first half scoring with the Indians leading big 42-14.
The Indians kept their focus on with the big lead and continued to expand on it into the third quarter once again holding the Minutemen to single digits in a quarter. Sanders also caught fire from behind the 3-point line, hitting on 3-of-4 attempts in the quarter and and 4-of-5 attempts total in the game.
Jesse Kemper was the the lone bright spot on offense in the third for Lewis County as he finished with all six of his team’s points in the frame.
The Indians came away with the 72-32 win, and picked up some praise from coach Dave Marshall.
“I wish it was great coaching. It’s what we’ve been working on all along. We know we can shoot the basketball, but to get to where we need to get we need to have some more balance, and we have the tools to do that,” Marshall said.
Marshall also commented on his team’s ability to keep focus on both ends of the floor even while enjoying a large lead.
“That’s something we talk about constantly on the bench. I think a lot of that comes with the senior leadership. I want to believe, and I think it is true that these guys play with an edge, and they know they’ve got a chance to be good. They just play with confidence,” Marshall added.
Lewis County was led in the game by Maddox Gillespie who finished with 10-points, earning some praise from coach Charles Simms.
“Maddox was tough for us the whole game, and I’m going to brag on him. He’s done a 180 since his freshman year to his senior year. I think he can play at the next level in either football or basketball, that’s the kind of athlete this kid is,” Simms said.
Lewis County (3-6) will look to get back in the win column on the road next week when they take on Elkins on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The Indians improve to 6-1 and will host Philip Barbour on Tuesday.
