PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — West Virginia high school athletics supervisors have issued a warning to all administrators, coaches and players: No player celebrations can include pistol (or gun) gestures or bow and arrow actions, according to a social media post.
“We have issued a memo to all basketball officials to appropriately address this behavior. These actions should result in a technical foul moving forward for unsportsmanlike behavior. It is taunting and leads to additional problems within the game,” WVSSAC Associate Executive Director Wayne Ryan wrote in a memo to administrators, coaches and officials.
“These behaviors do no promote a spirit of good sportsmanship that education-based athletics and the WVSSAC member schools routinely promote.
“Coaches, please make sure you educate your players that these two gestures will not be tolerated.”
Those two gestures originated on the professional and college levels, but major sports leagues and the NCAA are also cracking down on the gestures.
