MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) — The host No. 2-seed Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team secured a comeback win over third-seeded Preston in the Class AAAA Region I, Section 2 semifinals on Tuesday.
“If there is one thing that I can’t control as a coach then it’s energy, and our girls brought it tonight,” Buckhannnon-Upshur coach Alicia Lentz said. “With the help of our bench and the home-court fans we took care of business and extended our season. Having that boost of people here to support us was everything.”
The Buccaneers got its semifinal matchup against Preston off to a slow start losing the first set, 25-16.
Buckhannon-Upshur rebounded by taking the second set, 25-18, before dropping the third set, 25-20.
Facing elimination down two sets to one, the Buccaneers pulled even with a 25-22 fourth set victory.
The decisive fifth set saw Buckhannon-Upshur win the opening three volleys on an Alivia Cogar spike, Alyssa Abel block and Elly Jeran tip. The Buccaneers wouldn’t relinquish that lead.
Piper Mazarek dialed up a pair of consecutive aces to close out the Buccaneer comeback and bring Preston’s season to a close, 15-6.
“There was zero time to relax against Preston. It was tight the entire way and we just weren’t quite able to pull away,” Lentz said. “Thankfully, we dug deep and pulled out the final two sets. I credit our seniors for helping guide us through.”
With the win, Buckhannon-Upshur simultaneously advanced into the sectional title game against University and ensured a spot in the upcoming Class AAAA Region I tournament as each of the top two teams in the section advance.
B-U fell in the sectional championship in a three-set sweep, 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.
