TENNERTON, W.Va. (WV News) — A rollercoaster two-game stretch over the past week saw the Buckhannon-Upshur boys basketball team narrowly miss out on notching its second-straight ranked win, falling in a closely contested road date with No. 2-ranked Bridgeport Indians before correcting course by collecting a home win over Route 33 rival Lewis.
Fresh off unseating Fairmont Senior back on Jan. 23, Buckhannon-Upshur opened the game playing with confidence, building a 22-16 halftime lead over Bridgeport. However, the Buccaneers couldn’t complete the upset, falling to a second-half surge from the Indians in a 45-38 loss on Tuesday.
Bridgeport outscored Buckhannon-Upshur 29-15 over the final two quarters. After committing just four first-half turnovers, the Buccaneers struggled against a tighter Bridgeport defense, surrendering 11 second-half turnovers that fueled the comeback.”
Jevon Westfall sank a trio of triples to score a team-high 11 points while adding four assists and one steal.
Jerin Westfall added eight points while McDaniels and Xavier Robinette each contributed six points to help pace the Buckhannon-Upshur offense in the loss.
Returning to the court on Friday, the Buccaneers rebounded with a 63-51 home win over Lewis, powered by a pair of 19-point performances from McDaniels and Jerin Westfall.
Tied at 13-all entering the second, Buckhannon-Upshur outscored Lewis 20-8 in the frame to build up a 33-21 halftime lead which it never relinquished.
The Buccaneer offense was driven in-large part by 10 made 3-point jumpers.
McDaniels hit on four 3s on his way to finishing with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Jerin Westfall hit one 3-pointer on his way to adding 19 points, six boards, three steals and a block.
Both Jevon Westfall (7) and Jacob Frye (7) hit two apiece while Xavier Robinette (7) added the Buccaneers final 3-point jumper.
The Buckhannon-Upshur boys basketball team (8-5) will open a busy three-game slate with a road date with Elkins on Tuesday, Feb. 4 before returning home to host consecutive games against Grafton on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Robert C. Byrd on Saturday, Feb. 8. All games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
