GALLIPOLIS, Ohio (WV News) — Gallia County Sheriff Matt Champlin has announced a new training initiative to better prepare deputies in a variety of job-related duties focused on situational awareness and use of force.
“VR training is a program that was initiated in 2024 by the Ohio Attorney General’s office, as a way to enhance training for law enforcement professionals across the State of Ohio. After having the chance to experience this training first hand, I saw the immediate value of purchasing the equipment and training a staff member as an instructor to be able to accomplish this quality of training in house for our staff,” Champlin said.
The training immerses deputies in active emergent scenarios. After the completion of the scenario, deputies review the scenario, and the actions of the officers involved, with the instructor.
“This allows us to evaluate real world situations and apply policing methods, training and policy to how the situation was handled,” Champlin said.
Champlin said the purchase of the equipment and the staff training was funded through money that is provided by the state as an ongoing reimbursement for continued professional training for law enforcement annually.
