GRAFTON, W.Va. (WV News) — The Grafton boys basketball team's season-opening skid extended with losses to Lewis, Robert C. Byrd and Frankfort last week.
Returning to action on Tuesday with a road date against Lewis, Grafton got off to a promising start yet couldn't quite keep pace with a potent Minutemen offense in a 80-51 loss.
Tied at 15-all in the first quarter, Lewis outscored Grafton 22-9 in the second to build up a 37-24 halftime lead that the Bearcats never threatened again.
The Bearcats’ Dillan America came out with the hot hand in the first quarter, scoring all of his team-high 12 points in the opening frame, accounting for all but three of Grafton’s first quarter points. However, with added defensive pressure America wasn't able to resume his dominance, getting held without a point for the remainder of the game.
Owen Nestor was the only other Bearcat to score in double figures, finishing with 12 while Jaydyn Stemple (8), Tucker Stemple (5), Dylan Andrew (5), Caden Taylor (3), Jacob Moats (2) and Greyson Ramezan (2) rounded out the scoring for the Bearcats in the loss.
Robert C. Byrd’s Camryn Newsuan scored a game-high 21 points, 10 in the fourth quarter to break a 34-all tie, pacing the Eagles past the visiting Grafton Bearcats Thursday, 54-42.
The Grafton duo of Dillan America (13 points) and Mason Markley (10 points) to keep Grafton within striking distance until the final moments. Yet Newsuan sealed the game by netting eight of Robert C. Byrd’s final 11 points over the final four minutes.
Grafton's struggles to capitalize on a quick start culminated in a home loss to Frankfort on Saturday, 62-34.
Holding 7-2 with 2:30 left in the first quarter, Frankfort held Grafton scoreless for the remainder of the opening frame and the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second while rattling off 22-straight points to seize control of a lead it never relinquished.
Tucker Stemple netted a team-high 10 points to finish as the lone Bearcat to score in double figures for Grafton in the loss.
Still searching for its first win of the season, the Grafton boys basketball team (0-10) will look to break into the win column hosting Bridgeport on Feb. 4 before traveling to play Buckhannon-Upshur on Feb. 6. Both games are set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
