Preston led 59-58 after Austin White made the first of two free throws.
Off the missed second attempt, Newsuan got the ball at three-quarter court, attacked the rim and scored with 2.2 seconds left.
Preston’s heave at the buzzer was off target.
“I thought Preston played really hard,” Robert C. Byrd coach Basil Lucas said. “That’s two years in a row that we’ve played drag-out, tough, hard-fought contest. We were fortunate to come out on the winning end both times. It is a shame that some team had to lose.”
RCB trailed 40-32 with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter, but out of a timeout, Boyce hit a 3 to jump-start the Eagles, then RCB got a steal and Newsuan’s basket cut it to 40-37.
Boyce went 6-for-6 in the fourth quarter from the line to help the Eagles take a 42-40 lead, but Preston took advantage of missed Eagle free throws to send the game to overtime.
Hayes then scored the tying basket at the buzzer of the first overtime to force a second OT.
“In the first quarter, we came out really hot. The second quarter, they played better and we got in a little bit of foul trouble, so they were able to take the lead at halftime,” Lucas said.
Both teams are 5-3; Robert C. Byrd is home Thursday against Grafton.
