JANE LEW, W.Va. (WV News) — Lewis County Schools has a new way to provide aid to students during times of emergency.
Eastern Gas Transmission and Storage, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy company, donated a vehicle to the Lewis County Board of Education on Monday. The new vehicle can be used to get food and other supplies to families during times of need.
When Eastern Gas found out about the need for the vehicle, they were happy to help out, said Gary Jedrosko, director of regional operations for the company.
"The Board of Education was looking for a good, usable vehicle," he said. "We quickly scoured our fleet to see what we had and identified that we did have something to help."
The new vehicle will be able to provide a lot of benefits to students, said Melinda Stewart, superintendent of schools in Lewis County.
"Initially, this came about because of the snowstorm we just had," she said. "Our CIS (Communities in Schools) workers reached out to families who weren't prepared for the storm, had run out of food or couldn't get out of their homes. This will allow us to be able to go to their homes if they need anything delivered."

"Having access to this vehicle is not just convenient for us, but it will help us with access to students," Craig said. "We can use it a variety of ways ... We're now well prepared for the next snowstorm. With this four-wheel drive vehicle, we can get critical supplies to families during times of crisis."
CIS workers will also be looking at other ways the vehicle can be utilized in the county, Craig said.
"It's new to us, so we're going to be thinking about it and how we can use it creatively," she said. "We can certainly use it for home visits or wellness checks for students that have been out."
The donation would not have been possible without teams from both organizations working together. Stewart and Jedrosko both hope to continue this partnership to help the students in the county.
"Eastern has provided so much to the families in Lewis County and many of our families don't even realize what they do to support the school system," Stewart said. "Anytime we need something, they're there to say, 'What can we do to help?'"
"It's ongoing," Jedrosko said. "We absolutely will continue the partnership as we move forward."
