BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WV News) — Last month, President Donald Trump signed several executive orders relating to enforcement of immigration laws. Last week Gov. Patrick Morrisey signed an executive order directing state agencies to assist federal partners and said he would soon send a letter to local enforcement officials asking for their compliance too.
Harrison County law enforcement officials said they have not yet to received Morrisey's letter, but they are ready to assist.
"I haven't seen that (letter) yet so I'll be patiently waiting," said Bridgeport Chief of Police Mark Rogers. "We work alongside our federal partners in every way that we legally can and we will continue to do so."
Morrisey's executive order directs all state law enforcement entities to fully cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies implementing Trump's orders.
The governor's order mirrors language in Trump's order titled "Protecting The American People Against Invasion." The president's order directed the secretary of Homeland Security to authorize state and local law enforcement officials to perform the functions of immigration officers including the investigation of immigration officers and the apprehension and detention of undocumented immigrants.
Trump's order also directed the U.S. Attorney General and the secretary of Homeland Security to establish Homeland Security task forces in all states.
Rogers said he had not heard of any arrests being made due to immigration offenses within his municipality.
Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny II, who also said he had not yet received the governor's letter, said unofficial reports suggested some local undocumented immigrants had gang affiliations.
"Our primary role is to make sure the community of Bridgeport is well taken care of," Rogers said. "(Providing personnel to a task force) would be on a case and time basis as to whether we would be able to provide any type of staffing."
"We have several officers attached to federal task forces. It's something that is beneficial to our community in Bridgeport and it's something that we'll continue to do if we're legally able to assist in any way," Rogers said.
"Once we get some information from the governor and the president we will be making those assignments," Matheny said.
After reading a recent article which made mention of the process Harrison County Board of Education staff will use to ensure federal orders are complied with, Matheny said he "mirror(s) their position."
"There's a process in place to vet those orders and confirm those orders before the orders are executed. But I support those efforts obviously," he said.
While not mentioned in the governor's executive order, Trump also signed an executive order titled "Restoring the Death Penalty and Protecting Public Safety."
In its third section, the order directs the U.S. attorney general to pursue federal jurisdiction and seek the death penalty regardless of other factors for every federal capital crime committed by an undocumented immigrant.
Clarksburg Chief of Police Mark Kiddy and Drew Galang, Morrisey's deputy press secretary, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.Â
