LAS VEGAS (WV News) — Former Philip Barbour and Alderson Broaddus star David Shriver is getting his chance at basketball’s biggest stage.
The sharpshooter was recently named to the New York Knicks Summer League roster, making him one of five rookies to join the team in Las Vegas.
As a kid, Shriver took 1,000 shots each day with his father. It’s paid off.
Rolling back the clock, Shriver’s time at Philip Barbour showed that he had potential.
In his high school career, Shriver knocked down 190 threes, a record that still stands in Philippi. He did so not on volume, but on efficiency, shooting 42 percent at the high school level. He was a class AA first team all-state selection in 2018 after he averaged 21.6 points per game.
In that 2018 season, Philip Barbour won its first ever state tournament game, defeating Bluefield in a 57-56 finish. Shriver scored 16 points in the matchup. The entire team shot well, hitting 71 percent of their shots against the Beavers.
Funnily enough, Shriver wasn’t even the best shooter in that matchup. His teammate, Cole Whited, shot 13-13 to set a state tournament record during that game as well. He and Shriver combined for a whopping 43 of the team’s 57 points.
While that season didn’t end with a ring, it ended with opportunity for Shriver, who signed with Alderson Broaddus basketball.
Shriver played three seasons with the battlers, and he continued to set records. In his time there, Shriver knocked down 216 threes, second in school history, and did so with a 40.4 percent three-ball clip.
His improvement continued as he climbed deeper into his collegiate career.
Shriver spent a season at the University of Hartford, transferring to the school from AB. In a single season, he knocked down 88 threes at a rate of 41.3 percent. He was able to knock down four or more threes in ten different games that season with the Hawks.
Shriver collected a fifth “COVID year” in 2022, joining VCU as a senior transfer. In his time with the Rams, Shriver knocked down six of eight threes for a season high in a matchup with Dayton.
Shriver was a fan favorite during his time at VCU. Fans in the student sections wore fake mustaches to mirror Shriver’s now famous look. It spread back to Philippi when VCU made an appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Philip Barbour faithful gathered at the school for a group showing of the matchup.
They might do it again later this week.
“Our 3pt woes will vanish,” one Knicks fan tweeted following the summer league announcement.
Shooters always have a home on the court.
The Knicks summer league roster will appear in five scheduled matchups between July 7-17. The first of those matchups will be against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday, July 8. Alongside Shriver, Hedgesville graduate QJ Peterson will be another player from a West Virginia high school playing in the Summer League.
