LEESBURG, Fla. (WV News) — The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team pushed their winning streak to four with a pair wins on Monday in THE Spring Games in Florida.
The Bobcats beat the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats 10-0 in six innings before ending the day with a 6-2 victory over the Holy Family Tigers.
The Bobcats offense shined on Monday, totaling 16 runs and 14 hits for the day.
Against Pitt-Johnstown, the Bobcats were able to pull away with the victory behind a strong offensive performance.
The WVWC lineup was led by freshman Andie Dizon who went 3-4, including a home run and 5 RBIs.
Taylor Swartz finished 2-3, including two RBIs, while Morgan Norris recorded a 2-2 mark at the plate, knotchung pair of RBIs as well. Kaitlyn Rizor also brought in a run.
WVWC’s Abigail O’Shields picked up the win in the circle for the Bobcats after surrendering just two hits, while striking out six over the span of four innings.
McKayla Mandina came in relief, pitching two innings with two hits and one walk.
The Mountain Cats were only able to scramble four hits on the day with Kayla Miehl and Maddie Flowers hitting a double.
Pitt-Johnstown’s Julie Shinavski was handed the loss after going two innings and giving up seven runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks.
The Mountain Cats’ Kayla Meihl pitched four innings of relief, surrendering a stat line of 3 earned runs, six hits, three walks and 1 strikeout.
The bats were hot early for the Bobcats, opening the game up with three runs on three hits in the top of the first.
In spite of this early success, it looked as if the Mountain Cats were going to escape the inning unscathed but an error by the third baseman and pitch hitting a Bobcat at the plate put two runners on for WVWC with two outs.
Andie Dizon ripped one up the middle to plate one then Swartz put one in the right-center gap to score two, to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Bobcats continued to pour it on as Norris got an RBI on a groundout in the infield to add another run on the board.
Dizon continued her hot streak, hitting three-run homer to left-center to bust the game wide open at 7-0.
WVWC had another chance to tack on a few more runs up with runners on second and third with two outs until the Mountain Cats closed out the inning on a groundout to the second baseman.
The Mountain Cats were able to put a runner in scoring position but O’Shields struck out three straight batters to end the second inning.
Both offenses went quiet over the next couple of innings until Pitt-Johnstown was able to get runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Mountain Cats still couldn’t seem to break through as McKayla Mandina was able to get the Bobcats out of the jam.
WVWC came out swinging in the top of the sixth, getting a single and a pair of walks to get home a run.
Dizon racked up another RBI with a liner down the left field line then Rizor singled up the middle to allow Norris to score, extending the Bobcats lead to 10-0.
UPJ had one final chance but was only able to get a double and a walk in the inning, finishing the game in six innings.
In Monday’s second game against Holy Family, Norris led the Bobcats to the win with 2 RBI and a triple, while Dizon, Rizor, Swartz and Kiley Turner all finished with a RBI.
WVWC’s Kendall Stoffel again delivered a strong performance on the mound, pitching a complete game on 101 pitches, while striking out six batters and only giving up two unearned runs on three hits and walking three.
Holy Family’s Emma Clayborne went 0-2 at the plate but was able to record an RBI on a walk, while Madison Grubb, Jasmine Chui and Deanna Moser all picked up a hit apiece.
The Tigers’ Paige Tidaback took the loss after two innings of work, giving up two earned runs and walking two. Sam Ciasullo pitched four innings in relief, letting up four earned runs on four hits and walking two.
Stoffel found herself in a bad spot early with a Holy Family runner getting to third on a walk and two passed balls.
Stoffel was able to escape without surrendering a run in the inning with two strikeouts to close out the first inning.
The Tigers scored the first run of the game off of an error up the middle with two outs in the top half of the second inning.
Dizon was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the second before Norris tripled over the right fielders head to drive her home.
Rizor squeezed Norris home and then reached first on an error.
WVWC loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t muster anymore runs, carrying a 2-1 lead into the third inning.
The third inning was kind to the Bobcats as WVWC adding two runs on an RBI triple from Dizon and a sacrifice fly from Norris.
Stoffel’s no-hit bid was ended in the top of the fifth with the Tigers getting on base with back-to-back singles that put runners on first and second with no outs.
Stoffel was able to strike two out and force a pop up to get out of the inning.
Megan McMackin stole second and scored off an RBI double from Swartz.
On the next at bat, Turner ripped one to left field to plate Swartz, extending the Bobcat lead to 6-1 after five innings.
A diving stop by Alli Robinson held Holy Family scoreless in the top of the sixth inning after getting two runners on.
The Bobcats committed two errors in the seventh inning, allowing HFU to load the bases.
Stoffel hit a batter on a two-strike count to bring home a run, trimming the lead down to 6-2.
Holy Family’s Maria Leedom almost tied the game up with a grand slam but it went foul then grounded out to Grace Smith to end the game and seal the Bobcats fourth straight victory.
