TENNERTON, W.Va. (WV News) —
The University duo of Brianna Fox and Whitney Cox each delivered 20-point outings to lift the Hawks to a road win over the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers Tuesday, 73-49.
Locked in a tight 30-26 at halftime, the Fox and Cox jointly paced a University offense that relied on steady 3-point shooting and dominance on the glass to pull away, outscoring Buckhannon-Upshur 43-21 over the final two quarters to secure the win.
Fox connected on nine field goals, three of which were from beyond the arc while shooting 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 23 points. Cox drilled seven triples, scoring all of her 21 points from distance.
Together, the potent pair fueled University’s game-spanning long-range barrage from beyond the arc, combining for 10 of the Hawks’ 13 made 3-pointers.
For comparison, Buckhannon-Upshur made 18 field goals, only two of which came from 3-point range.
Allie Key finished with a team-high 15 points, Alyssa Abel added 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block while Harley Dean chimed in with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals in the loss.
The Buccaneer starting five delivered an efficient collective four-quarter effort, carrying Buckhannon-Upshur to a bounce back road win over the visiting Bridgeport Indians Wednesday, 63-42.
Abel, Allie Key, Harley, Brooklyn Smith and Aubrey Key combined for all of Buckhannon-Upshur’s points.
Abel scored a game-high 19 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Allie Key finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, two steals and an assist.
Dean rounded out the trio of Buccaneer starters in double-digits with 13 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Smith with nine points, seven steals, five assists and three rebounds and Aubrey Key with five points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal capped off a dominant showing for the Buccaneers starters.
The Buccaneers leaned on defensive collected its second-straight road victory, downing Robert C. Byrd on Monday, 56-36.
The Buccaneers started in a full-court press and backed off of it later, but remained in its man-to-man defense in the half court, forcing 22 Eagle turnovers to spark an offense that got off to a marked slow start.
Knotted in a scoreless tie until the the 2:55 mark of the first quarter, Buckhannon-Upshur eventually seized control of the lead with a 19-point run which began late in the first quarter and persisted all the way through the second quarter.
In that run, the Buccaneers only allowed one basket while Aubrey Key scored four points while Abel and Dean each added three points in that span.
Abel recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Dean scored 15 points with six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Allie Key added 12 points with nine rebounds.
The Buckhannon-Upshur girls basketball team (6-7) is set to play host to Elkins on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6 p.m.
