The West Virginia Emergency Management Division urges drivers to exercise caution during heavy rainfall.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — Due to ongoing rain and saturated ground conditions, the risk of rockslides on West Virginia roadways has increased, according to state officials.
The West Virginia Emergency Management Division and State officials urge drivers to use caution, especially in mountainous areas and along steep slopes.
“Safety is our top priority, and we want everyone traveling through West Virginia to be aware of changing road conditions,” said GE McCabe, WVEMD Director. “With the recent rainfall, rockslides can happen suddenly, so we encourage drivers to remain alert and cautious.”
Safety Tips for Travelers:
Stay Informed: Check weather updates from the National Weather Service (NWS) and road conditions at wv511.org.
Use Caution on Roads: Be extra alert when driving near hillsides or steep terrain, especially after heavy rain.
Watch for Warning Signs: Cracks in pavement, small rockfalls, or trees leaning unusually can indicate potential slides.
Do Not Stop Near Slides: If you see rocks or debris on the road, do not stop near it. Move to a safe location and report hazards to authorities.
Plan Ahead: Allow extra travel time and have an alternate route in case of road closures.
State and local officials are monitoring conditions around the clock with partners at the National Weather Service and are prepared to respond.
People are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and follow any instructions from emergency officials. Follow @WVEMD, @WV511, your office of the National Weather Service, and your emergency management agency on social media.
