Herd That has officially survived game one of The Basketball Tournament, defeating Jackson TV Boom 92-57 on Friday.
Herd That is assembled of Marshall alumni and other international professional players. The team is the No. 1 seed in the Lexington regional following a semifinals appearance in last year’s tournament.
Herd That took its first lead at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter and held it for the rest of regulation. The Elam Ending, an alternative ruleset in which a target score is set after four quarters of play, was set at 92, eight points ahead of Herd That’s total. Whichever team hits the target score first is the winner.
Marshall alumnus Stevie Browning nailed the 3-pointer that gave his team the win. He also did it while wearing Puma shoes, giving him a $1,000 cash bonus in partnership with the tournament. Browning played collegiately at Fairmont State before transferring to Marshall.
The assist on that shot came from Clarksburg native Jarrod West, who is playing for Herd That for the second consecutive year. West spent time at both Marshall and Louisville in college and most recently played for Borac Banja Luka, a team within the Bosnian league. West was named the MVP of the league and recently signed with KK Bosna Sarajevo, another team within the league.
West led Herd That with five assists and was perfect from the field, scoring five points on two shot attempts.
Jacorey Williams (17) and Xavier Munford (13) led the starting rotation in scoring. Jon Elmore, the No. 2 all-time leading scorer in Marshall history, added nine on three 3-pointers.
Chris Cokley led Herd That came off the bench for14 points. Nick McGlynn added 10. Cokley played against West and the herd collegiately at UAB, part of Conference USA before Marshall’s move to the Sun Belt. McGlynn attended Drake and plays professionally in Poland.
The win moves Herd That to the round of 32 in which it awaits the winner of a matchup between No. 4 War Ready (Auburn alumni) and No. 5 Waymakers. Kentucky’s alumni team La Familia is the No. 2 overall seed and features former NBA players Eric Bledsoe and Willie Cauley-Stein.
While Herd That has met up with in-state rival Best Virginia in each of the past two seasons, the two were split up this season. Best Virginia begins tournament play in the Pittsburgh region on Saturday. The only possibility for a matchup would come in the championship game.
