CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — Robert C. Byrd used a big secondhalf performance on both ends of the floor to take a 47-29 victory over Lincoln in Big 10 Conference boys basketball action Monday night at the Byrd Cage.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball with a combined 13-of-47 from the floor with the Flying Eagles holding a 19-11 halftime lead.
However, the pace and the play picked up in the early stages of the third period as Cam Newsuan made two driving layups for RCB and Wyatt Finch scored eight points for Lincoln on a 3-pointer, a conventional three-point play and an offensive rebound basket to close the Eagles lead to two, 25-23 with 3:30 left in the quarter.
That’s when Robert C. Byrd (4-3) after a timeout executed a perfectly ran play as Logan Boyce spotted up in the right corner and Anthony Barberio found him wide open for a 3-pointer which he made to give the Eagles a 28-23 advantage.
“We ran a really good play with several options on it and Anthony kicked the ball to Logan for a wide open shot,” Robert C. Byrd coach Basil Lucas said. “That basket helped us get the momentum back in our favor and I thought we ratcheted up the defense over the rest of the game from that point on.”
“We had just cut a 10-point (23-13) lead to two and it came down to us getting a key defensive stop and we didn’t get it,” Lincoln coach Jordan Toth said. “But, bottom line, we just missed too many two-foot shots and easy shots throughout the game and when that is happening, you are not going to beat a good team like Robert C. Byrd.”
The Eagles went on a 6-2 run over the rest of the third period to extend the lead to nine, 34-25, and RCB held the Cougars (3-5) to just one field goal and four points in the fourth quarter.
Robert C. Byrd was able to get two inside hoops from Carson Bennett and Boyce connected for a second trey for a 43-27 lead with 4:06 remaining in the game.
Boyce again led three Eagles in double figures with 19 points. Bennett followed with 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists, while Newsuan also netted 10 points for RCB.
“There is no doubt, we played much better in the second half and especially defensively which is where Robert C. Byrd has always made a name for itself on that end of the floor,” Lucas said. “I thought Carson Bennett played big and strong inside for us and Logan is going to be Logan on many nights.
“But, the main thing is this was an important Region win where we are 3-1. This is a big rivalry game and I get that, but we want to play at home in the Regionals as much as you can and that means a lot more to this team.”
Finch paced the Cougars with 13 points, while Aidan Rice added nine points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
Both teams return to action today on the road with Lincoln playing Fairmont Senior, while Robert C. Byrd travels to Preston. Tipoff for both games is at 7:30 p.m.
