KINGWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — Following the unexpected passing of Janie Lou White, members of the community and Preston County Senior Citizens Inc. have announced a public celebration of life in her honor.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Preston County Senior Center, 108 Senior Center Drive, Kingwood.
White passed away peacefully on Jan. 31 at her sister’s home, officials said.
In a social media post, Preston County Senior Citizens Inc. described White as a “champion for seniors” who built a legacy that continues to inspire others and serves as a reminder of the profound difference one person can make in their community.
White dedicated 34 years to the Preston County Senior Citizens Center, beginning her career in 1990 and becoming executive director in 2012, the post said.
Under her leadership, the center became a haven for seniors, providing essential services such as meals, transportation, and companionship, officials said.
“It’s the people I worked with and the seniors that came to the center,” White once said. “The older adults have so much wisdom to share. Every age group has a better perspective on life.”
“My career in community service has been a true blessing,” White said. “Where else can you be surrounded by people with a heart for service? This is a noble profession, one where you get paid to love people. I highly recommend it.”
Beyond her professional achievements, White had envisioned a retirement filled with travel and reconnection, planning to visit national parks and reunite with college friends. However, her passion for community service remained unwavering.
West Virginia Senate President Randy Smith expressed gratitude for White’s dedication, highlighting her mentorship on senior-related issues during his time as a legislator.
“She’s been my mentor on senior issues. Any time I had questions about seniors, she was my go-to person. Most of her life has revolved around Preston County seniors,” Smith said.
Anyone is welcome to attend the celebration of life in honor of White’s service and love for Preston County and comfortable attire is welcomed, officials said.
In lieu of flowers, White’s family has requested donations be made to Preston County Senior Citizens Inc.
